Project Based Learning Electives provided by the Berrien Springs Virtual Academy
Physical Fitness Classes at the Niles-Buchanan YMCA Spring 2021
Students and teachers must be able to readily switch to online instruction at any point in the semester in order to register for classes.
All students must complete a project for these classes.
The YMCA of Southwest Michigan is available to give tours, discuss class options, and answer any questions you may have. Please contact them at the Benton Harbor- St. Joseph YMCA, 269-428-9622 to set up a time to meet.
Students must be registered for Session I and will automatically be registered and must take Session II as well.
Format: In-person
Families must register with the Partnership first. The YMCA Homeschool Coordinator will reach out to all registered participants to finalize YMCA program details. They will bill the partnership directly. Classes must begin in January.

HOMESCHOOL SWIM & FITNESS- Homeschool children will learn the fundamentals of fitness and swimming. Students will participate in numerous activities that focus on physical fitness, team building, conditioning and learning to swim or working on stroke development and technique. We encourage each child to adopt a healthy lifestyle, which includes swimming and physical fitness.

Customized Fitness Semester- Our YMCA will pick classes for the semester based on what your needs. Can’t decide between gymnastics, swim or other youth classes? Let us help you pick classes that suit your needs and lets you experience a little bit of everything all in one semester.
Youth Sports- Playing in an organized sport league helps kids learn how to work with others and develop leadership skills. The Y’s Youth Sports League is focused on building life skills and fundamental skills of a sport. They will also be taught The Y character values of honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility. Your child will have your choice of our 4 organized youth sports leagues: Volleyball, Basketball, T-ball/Softball, and Optimist Soccer.
Athletic Conditioning
Ages 10-18
Designed to teach youth how to create hip and thoracic mobility using dynamic stretching. Strengthen core muscles using body weight, resistance bands, and balls. Strengthen glutes for power. How to use plyometrics for speed and agility.

Youth Strength & Fitness
Youth establish meaningful relationships and a supportive community of friends which encourages a sustained commitment to health and fosters a sense of achievement and heightened self-confidence. Youth will learn a variety of age-appropriate strength exercises including proper technique and how to build their own strength program. This class consists of cardio and strength training. Upon successful completion, youth will be issued a card that allows them in the weight room area without an adult.

Students Ages 13+ are invited to take 2 fitness classes per week. Students may select the same class or 2 different classes.

*Please note: it is important to make as informed a decision as possible when choosing your student's Community Resource classes. Most locations will allow a student to drop a class after one meeting, at no charge if it wasn't a good fit for the student, but not all. Some classes plan ahead based on the number that have signed up and have purchased materials, hired teachers, etc. and there might be a fee for class time or materials given to the student if the student drops after one or two meetings. The school cannot pay for classes that students do not complete, so choose wisely; if you do not take the class off of your student's schedule by the deadline, you may be asked to pay for the class time incurred prior to dropping the class.
