Tuesdays, 11-1:00 PM - Ages 6-12
Classes must begin in January
Description: This year we will cover 6-8 American Girl dolls, roughly chronologically (some skipping around for holidays); each doll will be covered for 4-6 weeks. First, class members will be introduced to a doll and we will talk a bit about the era. After the introduction of a doll, we discuss and participate in activities related to chapters assigned as weekly reading for the remaining weeks. The class has a full library of the American girl books available. The pattern will continue for each succeeding doll. Academic and fun projects appropriate to each era (a game, a dance, or a creative project) will be directly related to the weekly reading. Examples of projects
include: physical activities (like Pow wow dancing for Kaya or Victorian era games such as Tops), period songs or art and needle activities (like Victorian decoupage and Native American basket making).
Note: instructor may request some parent involvement/assistance, depending on the child.

Tuesdays, 9:30-11:00 PM - Grade 2nd and up
Classes must begin in January
Description:This class is essentially a cultural Geography Class – offering brief introductions to geographical areas around the world through pictures, discussion, food, music, games (maybe a folk dance here and there), and each week, a arts activity that reflects both differences in cultures and similarities. Examples of our crafty adventures have included: tiny rug weaving, Mexican paper flowers, origami, carp streamers, dot painting (an Australian aboriginal style), rain sticks, Masai “necklaces,” and basket-weaving. Cultures we cover include Mexico, UK, Japan, Australia and Scandinavia. Activities and geographical areas will change if students are taking the class for a second year.

*Please note: it is important to make as informed a decision as possible when choosing your student's Community Resource classes. Most locations will allow a student to drop a class after one meeting, at no charge if it wasn't a good fit for the student, but not all. Some classes plan ahead based on the number that have signed up and have purchased materials, hired teachers, etc. and there might be a fee for class time or materials given to the student if the student drops after one or two meetings. The school cannot pay for classes that students do not complete, so choose wisely; if you do not take the class off of your student's schedule by the deadline, you may be asked to pay for the class time incurred prior to dropping the class.
